Is it worth hiring a car in Majorca?
It depends. On how long you're staying, where you're based, and whether you plan to explore the whole island or stay in one area. But there's one thing almost nobody calculates properly: the real cost of car hire is not just the daily rate.

When car hire makes sense
There are cases when renting a car is the right call
Car hire in Majorca makes sense if you're staying 7+ days and planning to move around every day. If you want to explore the Tramuntana mountains at your own pace, stop at unmarked coves, or visit the Wednesday market in Sineu on a whim.
But if you're staying at one resort in the north or east for a week, going out for dinner two or three times and doing one organised excursion — renting a car costs more than you think and ties you to something you don't really need.
When private transfer wins
Transfer makes more sense more often than people realise
✈️ Late flight or long journey
After a long flight, the last thing you want is to queue at a rental desk, read the contract, figure out an unfamiliar car and navigate out of an airport at night. Your driver is there. You get in. Done.
👨👩👧👦 Travelling as a family or group
A private transfer for 4 costs the same as for 1. Split between four, the per-person cost beats any taxi and is comparable to shuttle services without the intermediate stops.
🏨 Staying in one resort
If you're based in Alcudia, Cala Millor or Puerto Pollensa and not planning to move around much, return transfers to the airport cost less than several days of car hire you don't really need.
🍷 Evenings out planned
If you're planning dinner out and wine, someone has to stay sober or you pay for a taxi back. The driver can stay on call for the evening, or you book the return transfer for when you're done.
🏔️ Hotel in the mountain area
Sóller, Deià, Valldemossa — narrow mountain roads at night, at dawn or in the rain are an experience many visitors prefer not to have on their first day of holiday.
📅 Short break (3–4 days)
For weekend breaks, renting a car rarely makes financial sense once you add insurance and parking. Two transfers cover the mobility you actually need.

The verdict
Neither is always the right answer
If you're staying a week and want total freedom of movement, hire a car. If you're based in one resort, have dinners planned, arriving tired from a long flight or travelling as a group — private transfer wins on every front: cheaper, more comfortable, no surprises.
There's always the hybrid option: private transfer on arrival (when you're tired and don't know the roads), car hire for the middle days, and private transfer back to the airport at the end so you don't stress the departure.
